ABOUT ME

The author has been described as a benign non-conformist -- someone who lives and experiences life on her own terms and values, and is not overly concerned with how humankind at large may judge that life path. This appraisal certainly is borne out in Summer of the Phoenix, as she comes to realize what it was that lent such richness to her experience of that summer.

The New Year rang in with a painful frozen shoulder and the demise of a years' long on-again-off-again romance with Mr. Wrong. This inauspicious beginning to the year was immediately followed with loss of a well-paying but dysfunctional job. Shortly thereafter followed a couple of burglaries at her off-the-grid ranch, about which Sheriff deputies did nothing except remind her of Colorado's "Make My Day" law and tell her to carry a gun. (Which she did.) PJ let go of her in-town apartment to move fulltime to the just-developing ranch in order to cut expenses and watch over the place. With 1-1/2" thick walls and expansive windows, she was close to nature even when indoors, living with none of the usual amenities. Mr. Wrong had told her it had all the inconveniences of camping without the view.

In Summer of the Phoenix, Ms. Paulson tells how she made-do, handled adversity, found richness and depth, and turned life around during a challenging summer.
